Backing Up and Restoring ESXi Guest Virtual Machines
I was searching for a backup solution for my guest virtual machines on my VMware ESXi host. The solution had to be a free solution at the moment since we had a temporary spending freeze on our IT budget. I was fortunate though to have come accross this article covering cool free tools to use for Virtualization. One of the products the author talked about was a free backup solution for ESX server created by Trilead.com called VM Explorer. The free version allows backing up virtual machines on an ESXi host, whereas the paid version allows scheduling backups.
Installing IPCop as a Virtual Machine on VMware ESXi Server
Another piece of the puzzle for my Virtualization project has fit into place. I was able to virtualize my IPCop firewall boxes using a free download of VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 4 server. ESXi is a type 1 hypervisor, which directly communicates with server hardware. This was the primary reason why I decided to use ESXi instead of VMware server.
The Best Free LAN Monitoring Software
With the growing number of servers, workstations, firewalls, routers, switches, Virtual hosts and VOIP systems to manage at work, I needed a tool which could alert me at the first sign of trouble. Using Nagios to monitor my LAN, I am now able to proactively deal with problems before it becomes critical. If that does not impress the boss maybe the price will when you tell him or her you paid nothing for an Enterprise grade network monitoring tool!
Run Your Own Free Enterprise Mail Server
During an economic down turn, why spend thousands of dollars buying commercial mailserver software or even pay monthly/annual fees for e-mail service? When you could use Open Source software to run your own free mail server. If you already have unused server hardware capable of running Linux or Vmware ESXi, you're a step closer to enjoying significant costs savings! I have successfully ran our e-mail infrastructure for the last nine years using open source software, maybe you could do the same. On the other hand if you're used to having paid tech support to call whenever you encounter problems I'd stick with commercial solutions.
Open Source Groupware
I have been searching for an Open Source groupware system, which would allow me to share calendars, files, use e-mail and preferrably made to run on a LAMP stack. Most of the Open Source groupware I have tried had these capabilities but GroupOffice had the most polished look. It also comes with two themes both of which were simple in design using colors easy on the eyes. I also found the user interface quite intuitive. The calendar including e-mail even has drag and drop capability!
