    Moving to C5

Concrete5_logoWell time to move on now to a newer Open Source CMS. For a few months now I have been busy playing around with Concrete5.  What I found most appealing using C5 was the ability to do edits right where you are. I no longer have to have another window opened to preview what I just added. Sure C5 does not have the same extensive amount of extensions when compared to Joomla but ever since it was released as Open Source in 2008, the number of addons (extensions) as they are called in C5 have grown considerably.  I am now in the process of moving all of my articles into C5. I have also added some newer articles like using the newest version of ASSP. Please visit my new site here. Thank you!

I manage numerous web sites at work but since we only have very few public IP addresses given to us I decided to use Name based virtual hosting. This is how I did it with the help of Virtualmin GPL.

Using apache2-mpm-itk on Debian Lenny for Virtual Hosting

I had problems trying to make suPHP work on my Debian Lenny server. I have tried re-tried different ways to make it work but all failed. Searching for alternatives on the web I came across this article on how to run vhosts using UID/GID of the web site owner. If a package is available on Ubuntu there is a very good chance it is also available on the Debian software repositories.

virtualmin-logo-220x45From my experience it is best to start off with a fresh Debian Lenny, install so as not to cause any conflicts with any software installed by Virtualmin's GPL install script. These are the steps I took to complete the installation.

Using Veeam FastSCP to Copy Virtualmin Web Site Backups

veeamMakes it easy to schedule backups in a number of ways. Even though Virtualmin is capable of sending backup data remotely using either FTP or SCP, I have decided instead to use the amazing free Veeam FastSCP to copy backup data to an external drive connected via firewire. Having it done this way helps cut down bandwith usage. Veeam was primarily designed to copy VMware ESX server bulk files in an extremely fast way.
